My Approach to Therapy

I use a gentle but direct approach to help clients get out of their own way and contact their truth. Because emotion is perception felt in the body, this is a person's truth at any given moment; I most often use an emotionally-focused approach that encourages clients to be present in their bodies as we explore together. I aim to guide clients in acknowledging, processing, and embracing whatever truths arrive in our session together and then collaborate with them to develop action plans based on what we find. I work primarily in the present moment using experiential modalities, as clinical experience tells me this helps clients reach their goals faster. In addition to mindfulness-based somatic therapies, I will often integrate psycho-education, fact-checking, and skills training when most useful. I highly value non-harm and flexibility in my approach and find different combinations of modalities work well for different clients. However, all of the modalities I utilize are grounded in science and based on the wisdom of the mind/body connection. Above all, I prioritize the therapeutic relationship and build strong alliances with my clients as we work towards common goals.

My Practice & Services

Fees are $120 per 50-minute session. I do have a limited number of sliding scale slots available; this option can be discussed during a free consultation. In addition, I accept Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance as well as Health Savings Accounts. I am pending to be contracted with TriCare.

My View on the Purpose of Psychotherapy

The purpose of therapy is to build awareness within the individual and his or her relationships, as contact with the truth brings clarity, peace, understanding, and frees energy up to build passionate, empowered and meaningful lives. Seeking therapy is a practical and courageous step towards problem solving and self-improvement. Every human being on earth would be better off with a good therapist. Acknowledging this reality shows strength, resolve, and self-compassion in a society that does not make that easy to do.

Theoretical Influences that Guide My Work

The burgeoning scientific field of interpersonal neurobiology forms the foundation for my work. We now know that the human brain and mind does not exist in a vacuum, but in fact is constantly communicating with our physical body and nervous system to create emotions and perceptions, as well as the bodies, nervous systems, minds, and brains of those we interact with. I capitalize on this reality in session by engaging you as a whole person while we relate to each other as a dyad, as I have found this leads to faster, more natural change in clients and the engaging style is also more fun for both of us. As a long-time yoga practitioner, yoga philosophy informs my practice as I aim to honor the client as a whole person: body, mind, energy, emotions, and spirit. I aim to guide every client in mindfully exploring and caring for each dimension of themselves as I believe neglecting any one of these layers of humanity leads to unnecessary suffering. As such, the modalities I employ seamlessly intertwine these aspects of human experience and include Somatic Psychotherapy, Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy, Yoga Therapy, Mindfulness Meditation Training, Internal Family Systems, Existential Psychotherapy, and Clinical Hypnosis.
